What True Leadership Means To Me

"True Leadership"Did you ever sit at a dinner table with other successful people and listen to their success stories? I personally made it my mission to try to figure out what true leadership means to me. Some nights I would just sit back and make a game out of it. Were they just born lucky, or natural leaders, or how did they get to where they are now? I came to the conclusion that whatever they were doing, they were doing something right. Well, a lot of things right, actually. Did you know that many of the ingredients that help to create a success story are actually riddled with failure? The only difference between the unsuccessful and the successful was that they learned from their failures. There’s nothing new about that.

I slowly came to the realization that true leadership and success go hand in hand. Success is a choice, and we all have to make the choice that we want to join in and achieve anything that we want in life. In a nutshell we have to change our thought process. When you’re on a path of personal growth, it’s inevitable you’re going to encounter obstacles along the way. It’s amazing the resistance you will encounter as you grow and change.

For example, look at all the successful leaders at Wealth Masters International and people around the world. What do they all have in common? Trials and tribulations. Think of all the failure stories that are out there. There are tons of them. The truth is we’ve all had failure. I can look at some of mine and say that was dumb, I probably shouldn’t have done that! What would have happened if I’d done something else? You better believe that I learned from the failure and was able to reframe it in terms of success.

When I was in my twenties I made the decision to quit my job on the spot. This was a big decision at the time. I’ll call this decision spontaneous, impetuous, or immature, or a combination of all three. One thing for sure… I could never go back. It was not going to happen, EVER. I had a great job there, and tons of overtime, nice coworkers, and a boss who put me down. When I quit my job I burned some of all my bridges. I don’t recommend this to anyone.

Since then, I’ve worked a lot on my attitude, and fell in love with talking about my dreams, my goals, my opportunities, and my positive ideas. There will always people in my life that insist on complaining about what they don’t like about their job, their boss, their coworkers and what’s worse they want you to participate in all of this insanity. Don’t go there.

I thought at the time no one around me can grasp what I’m going through. I have now thrown myself into a state of insecurity. Because having a nine to five job is security, right? Wrong… The moral of the story is that it took me another ten years to come to the realization that I could strike out on my own. Failure was not an option. That was the reason I went into my own business. I was now an entrepreneur.

Some of my friends and family thought I was nuts. It was this fire that fueled my decision to be successful. I always cared about what other people thought, and I was going to show everyone that being a self-employed entrepreneur would actually be a more lucrative endeavor. And it was. I was actually charging more per hour, working less and making more money. All the while I was challenging myself to problem solve effectively and save clients time and money.

I share with this others because I wasn’t afraid to do whatever it would take to be successful and that is what they really want to instill in the Wealth Masters members. They can achieve anything that they want in life if they are willing to work for it and stay focused.

We have seen it time and time again. The successful people. Their trials and tribulations. We’ve sat on the sidelines and watched them go through it. We’ve seen them struggle through and help others attain what they really want in life. And then we get it. Once we reprogram our minds then we just naturally have these positive thoughts and we have this confidence, and we have this posture, and at last people see you the way you want to be seen. Success is gained through your acts, through the work that you do, listening to positive information, reading positive information, and surrounding yourself with the kind of people you want to be. And that, my friends, is what true leadership means to me.

The Things We Think and Do Not Say

How is it that we go from knowing exactly what we want in life, to changing into some other behavior and form, subjugated to the circumstances that make up our reality? Most college and university students buy their time not exactly sure what they want as a career, not knowing that they have options and choice. Only to realize 2-4 years later 20-100K in debt that their education might not be what they truly desire and that they have no experience in their field to even qualify for a position?

I recently put out a call for a 6 month internship position in our company. The response was great, but what I saw in the college and university students was a pattern, indecisiveness, not  a lot of follow through and when given specific instruction of how to apply, 80% did not follow the straight forward details. This got me thinking out of the 20 people who applied, I accepted 4, out of the 4, two are the lucky ones who will get a $10,000 training program, an excellent referral and hands on experience that may lead to a full time paying position. How this relates to Jerry McGuire and his breakthrough by having a breakdown? Don’t wait for someone to show up to give you the golden key….stay focus and go out and get what you want out of life. If you have absolutely no experience in a field that you would love to be in, step out and show up, ask companies to take you on as an Intern and to provide you with a referral after the said time.

If you are older and would like to change career, the same applies to you. Do not let yourself fester in a dead end job because you believe you must pay the bills and support yourself or your family, I’m not saying don’t be realistic, but don’t give in to the mainstream conundrum of sheer boredom and loss of personal freedom due to some structure which keeps you limited.
